Merle Pipho is a founding member of the Arizona Center for Germanic Cultures. He was born in the northeast part of Iowa and grew up in a total German community where all four sets of grandparents immigrated from the Hannover, Germany area. He grew up learning and speaking the German language, but because of World War II speaking or to admit you were of German background was not popular in the area. He did not speak the language anymore after that time so he has more or less forgotten how to speak it, although he can still read a lot of it. Merle has been the president of DANK for the past 17 years and has been very involved in the Arizona German Community. He has previously served as secretary of AC4GC.
